Took a stroll in to the village today. Repairs to the church roof are now complete, with new shingles on the spire. Even the weather vane has been refurbished and is pointing the right way!

What do the letters on the weather vane stand for?

I W L : ‘could’ be the initials of local builder – Isaac Withers LASLETT born in Downe 1804. Perhaps he was involved in repairs or restoration of St Mary’s Church.
1828 : This was the year when the new vicar arrived, James DRUMMOND M.A.

It is possible they are attributed to a local builder. Whatever the reason it was no doubt someone who had a connection to the Church. We are still open to suggestions.
